On Tuesday, representatives from Kinder Morgan CO2 will present a check to the city of Cortez for a new pergola at the Cortez community garden, according to a news release from Cortez marketing and events coordinator Jon Brooks.

The presentation will take place at 5 p.m. at the Community Garden, on the southwest corner of the Cortez Recreation Center.

Kinder Morgan’s $4,500 contribution to the community garden project will fund a pergola to be placed above the Gregg M. Leighton memorial benches, which were funded by a 2015 donation from the Leighton family.

“We are proud to partner with the City of Cortez and the many hardworking volunteers on this valuable effort to create a community space and grow food where some of the produce is being donated to the Good Samaritan Food Pantry,” Kinder Morgan Chief Operating Officer Darrell Ricketson said in the release.

“The community garden has truly been a community effort with individuals and local businesses and organizations coming together to create a beautiful space that nourishes the souls of those who work in it while providing nourishment to the bodies of those who eat the food,” Mayor Karen Sheek said. “It has been exciting to see the space grow over the years into what it is today.”

The public is invited to the presentation to tour the garden and meet volunteers who maintain it.
