Jackson Gulch Reservoir is closed for winter

Jackson Gulch Reservoir has shut down for the season at an above-average level, Mancos Water Conservancy District Superintendent Gary Kennedy said.

The reservoir closed down Sept. 23 at about 54 percent, which is higher than normal heading into winter, Kennedy said.

“There’s a chance we could open back up, but we’re getting little storms, so I don’t anticipate that,” Kennedy said.

In other news, the district continues to pursue a title transfer for Jackson Gulch Reservoir from the Bureau of Reclamation. The district also is looking at a hydroelectric lease of a power permit at the project. Both of those projects are on hold as the district waits for documents from the Bureau of Reclamation, Kennedy said.

The district also has planned some rehabilitation work on the Jackson Gulch project. Some funding may come through in the next three to four years for the project rehabilitation effort, Kennedy said. The next item the district is focusing on rehabilitating is the reservoir inlet chute.

The cost to get those chutes into top shape would be about $1.2 million, which could be funded by both Bureau of Reclamation grants and water district funds, Kennedy said. The district has put in a request for funding to the Bureau of Reclamation, he said, but the rehab project is on hold until the district hears about the funding request.
