It wouldn’t be a San Juan Basin League district basketball tournament championship without the Ignacio Bobcats.
Both the IHS boys and girls teams punched tickets to Saturday’s league championship games with lopsided wins Friday in Cortez.
The boys triumphed in a 61-32 victory against Dolores, while the girls beat Ridgway 64-35.
The IHS boys (14-6) on Saturday defeated Telluride (12-7) in the title game, 45-44. The girls (14-6) defeated Norwood (17-3) in a highly anticipated rubber match at noon, 37-22.
Johnny Valdez led the Ignacio boys team Friday with 14 points. Calvin Lovato added 11, and Cole McCaw and Lawrence Valdez each had eight points. The Bobcats led 15-11 after what head coach Chris Valdez called a sluggish first quarter. The lead grew to 29-16 at halftime, and the Bobcats bullied the Bears in the third quarter with 29 points to take a 32-point lead.
The girls were led by freshman Morgan Herrera’s 18 points and 11 rebounds. Avionne Gomez added 16 points and seven rebounds. Alejandra Lujan returned to the lineup and had 13 points, while Makayla Howell had 10 points and seven rebounds.
