Homes protected from burn that got out of hand

The Mancos Volunteer Fire Department protected several homes on County Road H from a fire that got out of control Friday afternoon.

The fire started as a control burn that spread into willows and was blown across the field by the wind.

The Mancos volunteer firefighters got the call to put out the fire at 12:33 p.m., said Mancos Fire Chief Tony Aspromonte. The fire consumed about 12 acres and took about 45 minutes to control and 4 hours to extinguish. No homes were damaged, but a pile of lumber was consumed.

The field had been full of thick dry grass, said Amanda Rose who lives in the area.

Before starting a controlled burn call dispatch at 565-8454.
