High winds closes landfill for day

Rule requires closure at 40 mph

The Montezuma County landfill has closed for the day due to high winds, reports manager Shak Powers.

When winds reach 40 mph, federal law requires landfills to close to prevent wind blown litter. All local trash service companies were notified. Powers said winds today have reached over 50 mph.

“High-wind closures happen four to five times per year. We apologize for the inconvenience,” Powers said.

The landfill is expected to reopen Tuesday morning.
