High-speed chase ends in crash near Colorado-New Mexico line

Incident occurred on U.S. Highway 491 in New Mexico

New Mexico State Police were involved Friday in a high-speed car chase of a kidnapping suspect on U.S. Highway 491 that ended when the suspect crashed, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The Colorado State Patrol was notified Friday afternoon that New Mexico officers were pursuing a black Mitsubishi speeding north toward the Colorado line, said Trooper Gary Cutler.

He said at 4:45 p.m., authorities estimated the suspect would reach the Colorado border in about 20 minutes, then at 5:05 p.m. they were informed the car had crashed in New Mexico.

The suspect vehicle included a male driver, female passenger and a child, Cutler said.

The Colorado State Patrol and the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office were responding to the incident when they received notice that the car had crashed in New Mexico.

No information was available on the severity of the crash and whether there were injuries or criminal charges.
