FireWise offers orientation for neighborhood ambassadors

The Journal

FireWise of Southwest Colorado will offer the first of two Orientation sessions for residents wishing to become Neighborhood Ambassadors for their community on Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the San Juan Public Lands Center in Durango.

At this first session, potential ambassadors will be introduced to technical specialists from the Colorado State Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management and will learn about fire ecology, fire behavior, insects and disease, and of course, the importance of defensible space around the home.

The FireWise Neighborhood Ambassador Program was created to promote wildfire education and action. Ambassadors are volunteers who commit to educating and mobilizing their neighborhoods around wildfire safety and preparedness. FireWise supports over 130 Neighborhood Ambassadors in more than 80 high-risk communities across the five-county region.

The orientation is open to residents in all counties in Southwest Colorado. Residents interested in participating should RSVP to Charlie Landsman at laplatafirewise@gmail.com or (206) 697-2613. Information about the Firewise Council can be found at www.southwestcoloradofires.org.
