Firefighters respond to brush fire on Road T north of Cortez

Fire spread to hay and chip pile in windy conditions

Lewis-Arriola and Dolores fire crews responded to a brush fire in the Lebanon neighborhood Tuesday evening.

The fire at the corner of County Road T and County Road 24 burned into a pile of hay and spread to a pile of wood chips in windy conditions.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 5:30 p.m., contained it at 6:15 p.m. and extinguished it at 7:30 p.m. No injuries or structure damage were reported, said Montezuma County Sheriff Deputy Peter Schmalz.

Lewis-Arriola Volunteer Fire Department Chief George Deavers operated a backhoe to dig out hot spots in the piles, while fire crews doused the debris with water and worked shovels.

Dolores firefighter Kim Jones said the fire put up heavy smoke in windy conditions. The fire’s cause was not immediately available.

It was not known whether the fire was a controlled burn. In Montezuma County, residents are required to notify dispatchers before beginning controlled burns.

About 20 firefighters responded to the blaze, which occurred in an agricultural area with nearby homes. Equipment included water tankers, brush trucks, fire engines and a backhoe.

Winds were out of the northeast at 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
