Firefighters called to pot shop as bagel goes up in smoke

Three fire trucks, six personnel help remove smoke, chief says

A team of Cortez firefighters responded Friday afternoon to an overcooked bagel at marijuana dispensary Durango Organics.

Responding to a report of a fire alarm, three Cortez Fire Protection District vehicles and six firefighters arrived at the Main Street dispensary about 1 p.m., not knowing what to expect.

“They burned a bagel, and it put enough smoke into it to activate one of their smoke detection devices and activated the alarm,” Fire Chief Jay Balfour said.

Firefighters helped with smoke removal and made sure everything was safe. He was it was a “pretty benign call.”

He said the bagel was cooked in a toaster oven, and it doesn’t appear marijuana played a role in the incident.

A Durango Organics employee told The Journal it was a false alarm.
