Once again, heroic firefighters from around the United States descended on Durango to save our forests and our homes from the ravages of wildfire. On Tuesday, we had our 5- year-old grandson at McDonald’s when a group of firefighters came in. Everyone in the restaurant acknowledged them. McDonald’s sponsored their meals.
One of them noticed us and stopped to talk. He told us he has a son about our grandson’s age at home. He was from the Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department in South Dakota. Before he left, he tore the fire company badge right off the shirt he was wearing and gave it to our grandson. It made a lifelong memory our grandson will always treasure.
We would like to thank all the firefighters, especially the one from South Dakota who shared his personal experience with us.
