The FBI is searching for a suspect in a fatal shooting that took place in Aneth, Utah, on the Navajo Nation on Thursday, according to a statement FBI spokeswoman Sandra Barker.

A 46-year-old man was shot and killed about 2 p.m. Thursday, according to the FBI.

Aneth is in San Juan County, Utah, about an hourlong drive southwest of Cortez.

San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and Navajo Division of Public Safety personnel were assisting the FBI with the search, according to Barker. There was no threat to public safety in the area as of 2:30 p.m. Friday, Barker said.

Citing the ongoing FBI investigation, Barker declined to release further information about the identity of the victim or the suspect.

Several schools in the area were closed Friday, including Whitehorse High School and Montezuma Creek Elementary School, several miles west of Aneth, according to the San Juan School District website.
