One person was killed and another was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday west of Durango.

The crash was reported about 2:40 p.m. in the 15000 block of U.S. Highway 160, which is near milepost 77 and the Durango West II subdivision. The crash involved a Toyota Corolla and a semi truck pulling a Walmart trailer.

Highway 160 remained closed as of 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

One person died on scene and another was flown by CareFlight in critical condition, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Sherri Mendez.

The wreckage was blocking both lanes of traffic.

The highway was closed at 3:05 p.m., with traffic being diverted onto Wildcat Canyon Road (County Road 141) and La Plata Highway (Colorado Highway 140). The closure was expected to last into the evening hours, according to a news release from Colorado Department of Transportation.

Durango West I and II residents were encouraged to take the southerly detour to Hesperus, entering the subdivisions from the west.
