Durango families deserve diversity in education. It has been clear for decades that not all children learn the same. Education, like many aspects of life, is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. As adults, our common goal should be to get kids across the finish line of educational success, no matter what vehicle they use to get there.
Those educational vehicles come in many forms - public, charter, private and home schools. The fact that the few charter and private schools in Durango are full and have waitlists demonstrates community demand.
Diversity builds resilience within systems. This is true with education systems. Durango School District 9-R promotes diversity. There are committees and programs within the district dedicated to this single cause. Our community takes pride in its diversity. It is a no-brainer for the 9-R school board to approve the Ascent Classical Academy of Durango charter school. Six hundred families have already submitted expressions of interest for this school. This is huge for our size community. Durango school board, please approve Ascent charter school, provide diverse educational opportunities for our kids.
