Fairgrounds Speedway set to host sprint cars

Weekend races promise thrills

For the first time in nearly 20 years, sprint cars will fire up their engines and compete at Fairgrounds Speedway in Cortez.

Billed as one of the best shows of the decade, races will take place on May 5 and May 6, and several classes of cars will be featured, including hobby stocks, stock cars, sports-mods and modifieds. Each race will be sanctioned by the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) and drivers will earn points in the IMCA season series.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and races will begin at dusk. General admission is $15, and family passes that cover five family members are available for $35.

“We haven’t had sprint cars at the Cortez track in nearly 20 years,” said track promotor Kevin Faddis. “It was a big draw back then, and I wanted to do something different for the fans. It should be a lot of fun.”
