Drivers can expect delays during their commute between Mancos and Durango, thanks to the chip sealing project that commenced Monday morning.
The Colorado Department of Transportation created an online alert July 26 warning drivers of the construction, which will require lane closures and single-lane alternating traffic, according to CDOT’s website. The project is expected to continue through September.
Starting Monday, Aug. 5, crews will continue chip sealing at mile post 67 near Cherry Creek Road and will continue east. During the first week of construction, the crew completed approximately 6 miles of chip seal, according to a CDOT release Friday.
The Mancos to Durango section is expected to be done by mid-August. Crews will then move on toward Bayfield, according to the release.
Road crews are scheduled to be working from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers can expect 15-20 minute delays beginning approximately 5 miles east of Mancos around mile post 61.
The speed limit will move down to 40 mph in the work zone, and traffic will be guided by traffic controllers. CDOT reminds drivers to slow down to avoid flying loose rocks, increase distance between vehicles, and follow other signage in the area for everyone’s safety.
“This resurfacing operation is a two-step process that includes first an application of asphalt emulsion and then a layer of crushed rock to an existing asphalt pavement surface,” CDOT’s travel alert says. “Motorists are urged to use slower speeds through the work zone to avoid vehicle damage.”
Preliminary project tasks began in late June with the help of CDOT’s contract partner Intermountain Slurry Seal to resurface the road. These tasks included removing paint markings from the roadway.
