Escalante Middle School student found dead

Durango School District 9R offers resources for families

An Escalante Middle School student was found dead in his home Tuesday morning.

The 15-year-old boy was found by his parents at their home on the 8000 block of U.S. Highway 550, a La Plata County Sheriff’s Office news release said.

Sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical service workers arrived at the home about 8:50 a.m., but the boy could not be revived, the release said.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Dan Bender declined to release the name of the student.

He also declined to provide details about the circumstances of the teen’s death. The La Plata County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death after an autopsy is completed, the news release said.

Durango School District 9-R sent a letter Tuesday to Escalante families, expressing concern and sympathy for the boy’s family and offering death and grief resources for members of the community.

The letter from Escalante Principal Jeremy Voss provided these resources:
