Eli Tomac of Cortez on Saturday won the second of two motos to place third overall in the 450cc AMA Motocross at Hangtown in Sacramento, California.
After two rounds in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship series, Tomac sits in fourth place, one point behind Jason Anderson, 76-75.
Anderson was the overall winner at Hangtown after winning Moto 1 and placing third in Moto 2. Chase Sexton was the runner-up after placing second in both motos.
Ken Roczen and Christian Craig rounded out the top five overall.
Tomac finished fourth in the first moto.
Sexton went to the lead early in Moto 1 with Anderson in tow. Roczen, Plessinger and Tomac filled out the top five after one lap.
Tomac moved into fourth place in Lap 2, and Sexton stretched out a six-second lead by Lap 4.
Anderson gradually cut into Sexton’s lead. By Lap 11, he was two seconds behind, and by Lap 12, less than one second back. He took the lead in Lap 12 and held off a late challenge by Sexton to win.
Roczen was third, and Tomac remained in fourth. Craig was fifth.
Roczen took the early lead in Moto 2, with Sexton in hot pursuit. Antonio Cairoli, the hole shot winner, was third, and Ryan Dungey and Tomac rounded out the front five.
Tomac wasted no time starting his charge to the front.
He passed Dungey for fourth place in Lap 2 and Cairoli for third place in Lap 3.
In Lap 5, Tomac put up the fastest lap of the race, at 2:10.598, as he stalked Roczen, who had surrendered the lead to Sexton. And in Lap 7, he passed him for second place.
After measuring Sexton, then closing the gap in Lap 9, Tomac went to the lead in Lap 10 and led the rest of the way to cross the finish line 1.288 seconds ahead in Lap 16.
Anderson finished third after starting the moto in sixth place. Roczen and Craig rounded out the top five.
Tomac was third-fastest in qualifying rounds Saturday, with a best lap of 2 minutes, 6.726 seconds. Anderson posted the fastest lap, at 2:06.726, and Sexton was second at 2:06.660.
