Eli Tomac won Round 2 of the 2025 Supercross season in San Diego on Saturday, becoming the first racer in Supercross history to have wins across 11 consecutive seasons.
At the start of the 450 main event in San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, Vince Friese claimed the hole shot, while Tomac came around the first corner in 10th place. Jett Lawrence rode in eighth, while Sexton rode in fifth. Sexton crashed in one of the track’s tight turns, falling to last place as the other riders rode past.
Cooper Webb, who the announcers noted rides well on tracks with tight turns, moved to first. Tomac and Lawrence both moved up several positions, battling in fifth and sixth place. Lawrence passed Tomac, but Tomac immediately passed Lawrence back and reclaimed his fifth-place spot.
“That is Eli Tomac style,” the announcers said.
Within half a lap, Tomac passed Malcolm Stewart for fourth. At the 12-minute mark, Tomac had moved to third place and was putting pressure on second-place Ken Roczen, while Lawrence rode on Tomac’s heels in fourth.
After moving past Roczen, Tomac and Lawrence flew past Webb on the inside, with Tomac managing to hold on to the first-place spot despite the pressure by Lawrence. Lawrence tried to nudge past Tomac, but was unsuccessful.
“It is on now,” announcers said.
After blazing through the final lap of the race, Tomac placed first overall. Lawrence placed second and Webb third.
“The legend has done it,” the announcers said.
Earlier in the day, in the first heat of the 450 race, Jett Lawrence claimed the hole shot, with Webb and Anderson right behind him. The announcers noted that the San Diego track features tighter corners than the majority of tracks, which is an advantage to Webb.
Even with some “hassling” by Webb, Lawrence maintained his lead for the entirety of the race, and won by five seconds. Webb and Jason Anderson placed second and third, respectively.
In the second heat of the 450, Tomac snatched the hole shot and rode to an early lead ahead of Friese and Sexton.
The announcers noted Tomac’s strong performance at the first race in Anaheim, adding that he is “looking really confident on his motorcycle.”
Sexton moved past Friese into second, starting to eat slowly into Tomac’s lead. As the racers headed into the final lap, Tomac was about three seconds ahead of Sexton, and held onto the lead, placing first. Sexton placed second and Roczen third, after pulling past Justin Barcia.
The next Supercross race is Saturday at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.
