Cortez’s Eli Tomac won the round three Supercross 450SX heat race at Angel Stadium in Anaheim before placing seventh overall in the main event. Tomac was “buried” in the pack of racers out of the gate.
After the main event’s conclusion, Ken Roczen moved to first in the overall point standings with 62 points. Chase Sexton is in second with 59 points, and Tomac and Jett Lawrence were tied for third with 57 points.
In the 450 main event, Justin Cooper claimed the hole shot, while Tomac got stuck toward the back of the pack.
“Tomac did not get a jump, he’s buried,” announcers said.
Behind Cooper, Hunter Lawrence raced in second and Jett Lawrence in third. Because of the track’s slippery corners, the race’s commentators noted that the riders would need to be patient and wait for the right opportunities to pass.
At that moment, Cooper nearly crashed, but maintained his position. Tomac raced in 16th.
Jason Anderson moved to second place, while Jett Lawrence passed Hunter for third. At the 14-minute mark, Tomac had moved to 10th place.
Anderson passed Cooper for first while Jett Lawrence raced on his heels in third. Soon, Jett moved past Cooper for second while commentators noted that this round may be Anderson’s best race of the year, so far.
Tomac moved to ninth.
Anderson held the lead for the majority of the latter half of the race, despite Jett’s relentless pursuit. Despite his best efforts, Jett passed Anderson in the whoops section around the five-minute mark. Jett nearly crashed at the end of the whoops section, but was able to hold his balance.
At the three-minute mark, Tomac was racing in seventh place while Roczen and Anderson battled back and forth, side by side, for second place.
Jett Lawrence won the main event, with Roczen taking second, Anderson third, Sexton fourth, Hunter fifth, Cooper sixth and Tomac seventh.
“A valiant effort from Eli Tomac,” the announcers said.
In the first heat earlier that evening, Tomac, Malcolm Stewart, Hunter Lawrence, Justin Cooper, Aaron Plessinger and Cooper Webb went head to head.
Tomac claimed the hole shot and maintained a commanding lead for the entirety of the race. Webb raced behind in second and Hunter Lawrence in third.
“If this is the farewell tour for Tomac, he wants to go out on top,” commentators noted.
In Heat 2, Jett Lawrence, Sexton, Anderson, Roczen, Justin Barcia and Dylan Ferrandis raced.
While Jett Lawrence took the hole shot, Anderson passed him within the first lap for the lead. Out of the gate, Roczen raced in third and Sexton in fourth.
The announcers noted that Jett didn’t seem to have the “urgency” he’d had in previous seasons, adding that they hoped to see more aggressiveness return to his racing.
Anderson placed first, Jett Lawrence second and Sexton third in Heat 2.
