To recycle unwanted electronics at a discount, community members headed to the Montezuma County Landfill on Oct. 26.

The League of Women Voters put on the e-waste recycling event, and more than 650 things were recycled, said League of Women Voters’ Connie Clementson.

To curb the cost of recycling things like computers, microwaves and old phones, the event acted as a cost share, where the person recycling an item paid half and the League of Women Voters covered the other half, said landfill manager Mel Jarmon.

The LOR Foundation awarded the League of Women Voters a $10,000 grant that made the event possible.

“We didn’t use all of our matching funds and plan to schedule a shredding event after April 15 or another e-waste event,” Clementson said.

Jarmon said it was the first time they had an e-waste recycling event, and that it wasn’t as busy as he anticipated.

“It was busy in the morning and slowed down in the afternoon,” he said.

In addition to a future event, Clementson said the League created recycling learning centers in the county’s libraries, as well as traveling centers that aim to educate students “the importance of learning ways to reduce waste and … recycling when possible.”
