Durango is wild about Bernie, too

People are still taking about the presidential inauguration held Jan. 20. And while a lot of that talk is about the new Biden administration and the historic swearing in of Kamala Harris, our first female vice president, it was Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders who apparently stole the show. Sanders arrived to the ceremony looking pretty practical in his Burton coat, practical dress pants and one accessory we haven’t been able to unsee since: Sanders’ mittens, which were given to him by Jen Ellis, an elementary school teacher in Vermont. The mittens have gained instant fame: They were made from a recycled sweater and fleece made from recycled plastic bottles.

On Facebook, Durango Motor Co. offered a bit of encouragement for a waiting Sanders: “Smile, Bernie! Service at DMC is quick and easy!”

The internet has since gone completely insane with memes of Sanders in his outdoor gear, slumped in a chair – almost like he’s waiting for his wife who’s trying on clothes in a fitting room. The memes feature the senator (in his chair) in almost every possible setting – from iconic movie scenes to professional sports to pop culture scenes.

And yes, to places around Durango, including the Diamond Belle Saloon, Fort Lewis College, the waiting room at Durango Motor Co. – and even the front steps at The Durango Herald.

Sanders patiently waits on the front steps of The Durango Herald.
