For over 40 years, Duncan Oveson has been in the upholstery business, and for the first time in a long time, the 61-year-old was breathing a sigh of relief.
Mostly because Oveson now has room to do so – lots of room.
Duncan’s Upholstery recently moved from 1401 E. Main St. to 201 N. Pinon, Suite B-2, and the move not only has Oveson breathing a sigh of relief, but it also has him grinning from ear to ear.
“Just look at all this room,” he said Friday.
His last upholstery shop, which was located just east of Big R, was about 1,500 square feet. The new location has about 4,400 square feet.
“Isn’t this nice,” he said, gesturing to the amount of space, filled with projects, sewing machines and fabric and even two classic cars.
Oveson has had an upholstery shop in Cortez since 2007 and before that, one in Mancos from 1977 to 1985. He has also had shops in northern Minnesota and California.
“This is a funny I’ve been in this business so long, especially since it happened by accident,” Oveson said.
You see, when Oveson was just 21 years old, he had a 1954 Studebaker pickup and a 1958 Cadillac, and they both needed upholstery work in Colorado Springs.
“I offered to do upholstery work for the shop for free. A guy took me in for one day, and I stayed for seven years,” Oveson said.
Oveson said he enjoys the work. On Friday, he was reupholstering a couch that he first upholstered 30 years ago. Oveson says he also enjoys working on classic cars.
“It’s satisfying, being able to make and do things with your hands.
