A Jeep CJ5 and its trailer hauling scrap metal ran off County Road G near milepost 16 at 3:31 p.m. on Monday.

It was traveling eastbound down a grade when it crossed into the westbound lane and went down an embankment, continuing off the road, said Colorado State Patrol officer Sherri Mendez.

The driver reportedly left the scene on foot, leaving behind an injured passenger who sustained serious bodily injury after being ejected from the Jeep.

The double-door Jeep had no roof or doors, but it did have a roll cage. It rolled over when it went off the roadway, and left scrap metal and Pepsi cans from its open trailer on Road G.

This was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

The driver, who has not been found, will face hit-and-run charges for allegedly leaving the scene before police arrive and for failing to report an accident. Since a passenger was injured, charges are heightened, Mendez said.
