Dolores volleyball team looks stout against league competition

Lady Bears pick up victories over Ridgway and Ignacio

During matches against two San Juan Basin League opponents over the past week, the Dolores High School volleyball team played impressively and walked away with two convincing victories.

The first of the Lady Bears’ wins came at home against Ridgway on Sept. 15 by a score of 25-12, 25-10, 25-7. Senior Tatum Majors delivered one of her finest offensive performances of the season as evidenced by her team-high 12 kills, and junior Jordan Elder hammered down point-ending spikes.

Solid serving played a key role in the Dolores victory as Lady Bears’ players registered 14 aces and made only four service errors. Elder led her team with seven aces, and seniors Kortni Spurlock and Abby Jones each had two aces.

Elder led her team in digs with eight, and Abby Jones was credited with a match-best 26 assists.

Three days after its win over Ridgway, Dolores traveled to Ignacio and dominated from start to finish in route to a 25-16, 25-9, 25-13 victory. Elder led the Lady Bears in kills with 13, and sophomore Sydney Smith hammered down five kills from various spots on the court.

Jones led Dolores in aces with four, Majors, Elder, and senior Addie Jones were each credited with two blocks, and Abby Jones led the Lady Bears in assists with 17. Majors was credited with a team-best 11 digs.

With the win, Dolores improved its record to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the San Juan Basin League.

Next up for the Lady Bears will be a home matchup against Norwood, which will take place in Dolores on Sept. 20.
