Dolores volleyball team bests Dove Creek

No. 8 Lady Bears defeat talented Lady Bulldogs squad
Jordan Elder had a team-high 13 kills against Dove Creek on Tuesday.

One day after moving up to No. 8 in the Colorado High School Activity Association’s poll that ranks Colorado’s top Class 2A teams, the Dolores High School volleyball team took the court Tuesday against Dove Creek and locked down an impressive four-set victory.

For the Lady Bears, the 25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, victory was especially impressive in light of the fact that the Lady Bulldogs entered the contest with an 8-2 record overall and a 4-0 record in the San Juan Basin League.

Playing a key role in Dolores’ victory was sophomore Jordan Elder, who continued to assert herself as one of the area’s top outside hitters by hammering down a team-high 13 kills. Junior Tatum Majors recorded seven kills for the Lady Bears, and Josie Majors and Sierra Schwartz each had five.

Defensively, the Lady Bears anchored by Schwartz, who used her lateral quickness to make 15 digs. Elder also played a role defensively with 13 kills. The net play of Tatum Majors and Josie Majors also proved significant as the sisters combined for six blocks.

With the victory, Dolores improved to 9-1 on the season and 7-0 in the San Juan Basin League. Dove Creek fell to 8-3 overall, but still sits second in the San Juan Basin League with a league-record of 4-1.

The Lady Bears next match will take place on the road against Norwood (3-9 overall, 1-6 in the SJBL) after the news deadline on Sept. 28. Dove Creek’s next contest will take place at home against Telluride on Oct. 6.
