Dolores volleyball opens league play with win over Telluride

Throughout last year’s high school volleyball season, Dolores High School outside hitter Jordan Elder terrorized San Juan Basin League competition.

The Lady Bears’ talented junior was back at it in Telluride on Sept. 6 when she smashed down 18 kills in just three games and in doing so, spurred her team to a 28-26, 25-15, 25-22 victory.

Dolores improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the SJBL with the win, while Telluride dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the SJBL with the loss.

Complementing Elder’s efforts on offense was junior Madison Rodriguez, who came through with eight kills. Senior Tatum Majors had six kills, and sophomore Sydney Smith had five. Majors led the Bears at the service line with a match-best five aces.

On defense, four Lady Bears players achieved more than 10 digs. Smith paced the Lady Bears with 19 digs, Schafer registered 14 digs, senior Abby Jones had 12 digs, and Elder had 11. Jones led Dolores with a match-best 23 assists.

Now riding a two-game winning streak, Dolores is looking ahead to its home opener, which will take place against Ridgway on Sept. 15. Prior to returning to their home court, however, the Lady Bears will travel to face Dove Creek on Sept. 11 for a match that will feature two of the San Juan Basin League’s best teams.
