Dolores track teams enjoy success in Bayfield

Elder and Schwartz score Top 3 finishes

Although very few members of the Dolores High School track team finished in the Top 15 in individual events at the Pine River Invitational in Bayfield on April 13, those who did generally finished near the top.

Leading the way for Dolores on the girls’ side was sophomore Jordan Elder, whose natural athleticism and outstanding leaping ability were on full display when she flew 15 feet, 8¾ inches en route to a second-place finish in the long jump.

Senior Sierra Schwartz also put forth an impressive athletic display when she raced to a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (17.73) against tough competition. Freshman Sydney Smith rounded out the team’s top finishers with a ninth-place finish in the high jump (4 feet, 4 inches).

The Dolores girls team finished eighth overall in the 12-team meet with 35 points, and Alamosa emerged victorious in the team-competition with 196 points overall.

On the boys’ side, Dolores was led by junior distance standout Phillip Huffman, who placed second in the 1600-meter run (5:02.26) and 12th in the 800-meter run (2:21.16). Emerging freshman hurdler Camden Malloy placed 10th in the 110-meter hurdles (19.79) and 13th in the 300-meter hurdles (51.09).

The boys team finished 11th overall with eight points, and Bayfield High School won the boys portion of the meet with 159 points overall.

Next up for both Dolores track teams will be the B&B Aztec Invitational in Aztec on April 20.
