Dolores Schools will welcome a School Resource Officer back this week after spending the first half of the year without one.
Dolores schools announced that Deputy Dave Van Bibber, a recently retired Colorado State Trooper with military experience, will join the schools on Jan. 22.
Dolores School District Superintendent Scott Cooper said he and the principals met with newly elected Sheriff Steve Nowlin about school security last week and developed a plan for the School Resource Officer.
The position will be fully funded by the Sheriff's Office, Cooper said.
"Deputy Dave" Van Bibber will dress in business casual clothing while working on our campus. He will be armed, wear a badge and a school ID. He will drive an unmarked patrol vehicle that will be parked near the front of the secondary schools.
He will receive School Resource Officer training this spring and lead safety classes as needed or requested by counselors, the preschool director and principals, Cooper said.
"School safety for our students and staff is job No. 1 for Deputy Dave," Cooper said.
Van Bibber will tour the schools and facilities during his first week on the job to familiarize himself with buildings, schedules and routines.
"Please introduce yourself to him. He is very personable and approachable," Cooper said.
Van Bibber will attend the next round of staff meetings and board meeting to introduce himself and answer questions.
"I am very thankful and pleased with Sheriff Nowlin's safety and security support," Cooper said.
