Registration is now open for Dolores Public Library’s Summer Reading Program.
This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories,” and registered participants can earn points toward prizes by reading, attending library programs and completing bonus challenges. Adults can participate by playing library bingo. Top prizes include a new telescope for youths and dinner for two at Mesa Verde’s Metate Room for adults.
Summer reading activities began Tuesday. Events will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon with marble moon jewelry making, edible experiments to explore the Earth’s surface, an intergalactic cupcake decorating contest and more.
On Thursday, local musicians and father-daughter music duo Glenn and Hazel Smith will perform at 7 p.m. in the library garden along the River Trail, followed by an outdoor movie “Wall-E,” starting at dark, about 8 p.m. Thursday night movies are also schedule for June 20, July 11, and July 25.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the library will broadcast a live, guided recreation of Apollo 11’s journey at 2 p.m. July 15. This broadcast will be led by Dr. Carter Emmart, director of Astrovisualization at the American Museum of Natural History.
Additionally, children’s performer Steve Weeks will bring his fun, interactive performance of silly songs to the library at 3 p.m. July 22. All events are free and open to the public.
