The Family Dollar has secured its building permits and is expected to resume construction in Dolores soon.
Builders secured a demolition permit in November to tear down the old boat storage yard, but then jump-started the process and began digging the foundation footers before the building plan was approved. The town issued a stop-work order, and the company complied.
Now they have the green light, said interim town manager Lana Hancock, to build at their location on Colorado 145, adjacent to GST Liquor.
She said the company worked with the town’s request to add additional landscaping and reduce lighting on the back side of the store facing Central Ave.
“The north side will have added greenery, with shrubs and trees to soften the view for residents in that area,” Hancock said.
To reduce glare for neighbors the sign on the building’s north (Central Ave.) side will be illuminated with down-facing lights on the outside instead of lighted internally.
The signs on the building’s front (south) and west sides will be internally lighted, as will and the sign on a pole in front along the highway. The store will be 8,300 square feet, have a concrete parking lot with xeriscaping. The sidewalk in front will be a soft trail.
The Family Dollar has been making its mark in the area, with stores in Cortez, Mancos, Dove Creek, Monticello, and now Dolores. The company has more than 7,000 locations in 44 states.
Bryn Winburn, public relations for Family Dollar, said the Dolores store is expected to be open this summer, but an exact date will not be known until May.
“We are thrilled about this new location,” she said. “The new store offers the best Family Dollar has to offer in our expanded assortment of products and new layout.”
The retailer offers a wide variety of merchandise, including name brand foods and groceries, health and beauty aids, toys, clothing, household cleaners, seasonal items, pet care products and home fashions.
The store will employ between 8 and 10 associates, Winburn said, and “we look to hire from the communities we serve.”
