With the days getting shorter, the Bears athletic teams appear to be really warming up.
The Dolores girls cross-country team looks primed for a push for a state qualification spot, thanks to another meet with good pack running. The Bears placed all four runners inside the top 35 in the field at the Durango Four Corners Classic, which included a pair of season-best times, to help them prepare for the 2A Region 4 meet in a couple of weeks in Delta.
The sophomore quartet of Elia Lowe (23rd, 23:13), Keira LaRose (26th, 24:13), Siena Parr (29th, 24:40), and Maya Lowe (34th, 25:45) sits squarely among the contenders for a state meet appearance, and have continued to grow as a unit all season.
Both LaRose and Parr collected their fastest times of the season, as the Bears next competition will see them on their fastest course of the year.
Head coach Angie Lowe and her Bears will take on the flat course at Confluence Park in Delta against local rival Mancos, along with a field of approximately 15 schools to decide the field that will travel to the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs for the 2A state championships.
Meanwhile, on the volleyball court, Dolores also enjoyed a nice surge, picking up back-to-back wins for the second time this season.
The Bears (6-10, 3-4 2A/1A SJBL) toppled Norwood on the road, 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22) before traveling to Creede to sweep the Miners (25-22, 25-15, 25-19).
The Bears have won four of their past seven matches, and look to continue their positive trend under head coach Gina Hollen with a road trip to Dove Creek this week (Thursday, Oct. 13), before returning home the following Thursday, Oct. 20, for their Senior Day match against Telluride.
