Dolores Cowboys Play a Tie Game With Cortez

The Dolores town team Cowboys played the Cortez Tobacco Chewers to a 7-7 tie. On the latter's field last Sunday. The Cortez boys were all primed to take the river boys into camp, having a fullback from Gallup, and some of Dolores's former team players. Things looked bad for the Cowboys at the start of the fame, and just a last minute recruit of Chic Clay from Durango, gave them a full squad with which to start the game. Out-weighed about twenty pounds to the man; the Dolores boys took to the field in what looked like wholesale slaughter.

The Cortez team took the kick-off and went right to work with some powerful line smashes which were netting them some nice yardage, then for some unknown reason quit the power plays for deception and cross-backs. This was a "God-send" for the Cowboys as they were about equal on the brains and deception.

In the second quarter Dolores opened up with a series of passes and Ellsworth, Dolores half-back, finally took one on the two yard line Clay went over on the next play on a weak side smash. The extra point was added with a fake place kick, which ended in a pass.

In the fourth quarter Cortez' full back broke through on a cross-buck taking the ball to the eight yard line. The Cowboys held them for three downs but on the fourth, Higman went over for the touchdown. With an off-tackle smash, they added the extra point tying the game at 7-7. A few minutes later the game ended with the ball in mid-field and neither team showing much to an advantage.
