Construction is underway on an expansion project which will enable Montezuma Water Company to serve approximately 500 additional taps. The rural domestic water system recently acquired an $800,000 loan to finance the project.
Nielsons Inc. of Dolores will apply bituminous repaving to 12.1 miles of State Highway 145, under terms of a $425,570 Division of Highways contract.
The Senate Subcommittee on Public Lands, chaired by senator Floyd K. Haskell, took action today to study portions of the twelve rivers in Colorado, including the Dolores River, for possible inclusion in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The rivers were included in an omnibus bill sent to the full Senate Interior Committee for consideration. Legislation to add 15 rivers to the study category has been introduced by Senator Peter Dominick. "Some of the rivers proposed for study in Senator Dominick's original bills were unacceptable to the Subcommittee because they cross a great deal of private land," Haskell commented.
Weed cutting will be done by the town on vacant lots not cut by the owners and costs charged as in previous years according to decision by town board members at their meeting Tuesday night. They also approved to have the town septic tank pumped out and will proceed with plans to sell the State Highway Department some borrow dirt from the dump ground area as outlined for the board by Trustee Don Noland.
Town Marshal Charlie Aragon reported on a liquor violation at the Hofbrau and a hearing was held in which the place was closed for seven days. Two under-age youths, who were not present, had reportedly bought liquor there after coming in from fire fighting for the Forest Service. Kirk Martelon of the State Liquor Enforcement office took statements from the youths that were presented at the hearing and testimony also came from George Nicks, operator of the bar.
