Coach Bill Estes this week is looking forward to the start of basketball season with the first practice on Thursday, Nov. 1, with a large turnout of boys expected.
Estes will handle the varsity team, Mr. Page will have the JV and freshman team and Mr. Winet the junior high teams, both seventh and eighth grades.
The first basketball game is scheduled against Telluride on their floor on Nov. 30 with the next night seeing the Bears face Farmington JV on the home floor.
Estes said this should be an interesting season with five boys making up the team at one time, not just one or two as has happened sometimes in the previous years.
The Bears ended their football season with a 2-6 record after losing to Dove Creek last Friday afternoon 14 to 6.
The first half of the game was scoreless but Dove Creek scored early in the third quarter on a 39-yard run by Huskey and then again on a 29-yard intercepted pass.
Harold Ragland ran 9 yards for the lone Dolores TD at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was scoreless and the game ended 14 to 6 in favor of Dove Creek.
Estes stated that with a break or two at the right time the season could have gone 6-2 instead of the other way around, but the Bears' penalties at a crucial time probably prevented this.
The San Juan Basin A League title will be decided probably on Saturday, Nov. 10, when Norwood faces Sargent.
The two schools will have to get together to decide where the game will be held.
