America currently faces a barrage of untruths, inaccuracies and downright cruelty.
Let’s focus on one area where we need clarity and truth. I am referring to diversity, equity and inclusion. They are not just buzzwords. They are the cornerstone principles of a healthy, thriving and innovative culture.
It works to include all races and ethnicities; all abilities and disabilities; all genders; all sexual orientations; all religions; all cultures; all people with diverse backgrounds, skills and expertise. Notice the operative word here – all.
Here are a few things DEI helps to ensure:
- Ramps and sidewalk curb cuts.
- Subtitles and captions on phones and TV.
- Pay equity and transparency.
- Parental leave.
- Flexible work arrangements.
- Nonsmoking areas and an end to smoking indoors.
- Wellness programs and incentives.
- Large-print materials.
- More relaxed and inclusive dress code policies.
- Company covered mental and behavioral health resources.
Some of what DEI isn’t:
- Hiring an unqualified person for a position because of their ethnicity.
- Hiring based on race simply to meet diversity goals.
- A new fad. DEI has been around for many years, under different names.
There are many more benefits when we really look at DEI with open eyes and hearts. We need to fully understand what it is and not let hatred and prejudice cloud our vision.
In a world of chaos and misinformation, let’s educate ourselves about DEI, understand it and embrace it.
