District races become heated in prep softball

Three of the state’s top 10 teams in Class 4A come from District 1
Gallup 17, Aztec 0

The Gallup High School softball team won its fifth straight game and remains unbeaten in district play this season after a run-rule rout on the road Tuesday afternoon over Aztec.

The Lady Bengals scored nine runs in the top of the first inning, then added six runs in the second inning and a pair of runs in the third to earn the three-inning triumph.

The win keeps Gallup’s District 1-4A record unblemished after five games while improving the team’s overall record to 12-9. Gallup is currently ranked third in the state at Class 4A according to MaxPreps.

Aztec falls to 9-11 on the season (2-4 District) as the team prepares to clash at home against Shiprock on Thursday at 3 p.m. This will be the second meeting of the season for the two teams, with Aztec winning the first game on the road 21-3 over the Lady Chieftains.

Bloomfield 15, Kirtland Central 0

Bloomfield’s Nevaeh Archuleta drove in three runs, as did Annalisa Gallegos during a 15-0 road win on Tuesday afternoon over district rival Kirtland Central.

Archuleta went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of triples, while Gallegos also hit a triple while going 3-for-3 at the plate to pace the Lady Bobcats to its third straight win. Archuleta scored three times in the 4-inning contest, while Caitlin Zepeda, Trinity McMurry and Elianna Valencia each scored a pair of runs.

Bloomfield improves to 11-11 on the season (5-1 District 1-4A) and will be on the road for its next pair of games, starting Thursday at 3 p.m. when they visit Gallup. The Lady Bobcats lost its only district game of the season at home earlier this month against Gallup by a final of 3-0.

Kirtland Central (4-14 overall, 1-5 District) has lost seven straight games and will face Miyamura for the second time this season on the road Thursday at 3 p.m. The Lady Patriots blanked Kirtland Central 8-0 earlier this month in the first game between the district rivals.

Navajo Prep sweeps Tohatchi in doubleheader

The Navajo Prep softball team remained unbeaten against District 1-3A competition after a pair of runaway wins in a home doubleheader over Tohatchi.

The Lady Eagles won the opening game of the twin bill by a final of 16-1, then came back in the nightcap with an equally devastating win by a final of 15-0.

Navajo Prep (12-4 overall, 6-0 District) has outscored its district opponents by a combined margin of 105 to 11 this season. The Lady Eagles are currently eighth in the state at the 3A classification by MaxPreps and will look to extend its win streak when visit Grants for a doubleheader on Friday. Navajo Prep will return to district play on Tuesday at home against Thoreau.
