The Zia Taqueria Cyclocross Series had its first race on Saturday in Dolores, racing on soft and slow grass.

More than 50 participants challenged themselves on some tricky features, but in the end it was a pair of national champions who claimed the first wins of the series.

Sarah Sturm, a multitime singlespeed cyclocross national champ, won the open women’s championship.

Henry Nadell, a collegiate cyclocross champ at Fort Lewis, finished first in the open men’s race.

Competitors, however, will have four more chances to reach the top of the podium.

Saturday’s race will be in Cortez. On Nov. 13, the race will be held at Durango Mesa. On Nov. 20 and 21, the final two races in the series will be held at Fort Lewis College.

On Wednesdays at noon, and 4:30 p.m. for FLC and Devo riders, cyclocross practices will also take place at the Smith Fields at FLC for bikers to hone their skills before the competitions.

Registration for Saturday’s race in Cortez will close at midnight Friday, and there will be no race-day registration. People can register at https://bit.ly/3CLi3B9

The course will have a sand pit, steep hills and roll through a BMX track.
