Eligible students from Montezuma County may apply for the 2025 County Sheriffs of Colorado scholarship before the deadline of Feb. 28.

Each year, the County Sheriffs of Colorado awards around 30 $500 scholarships through its Honorary Membership program. The program was established in 1978.

The scholarship is available to Montezuma County students in odd-numbered years, such as 2025. However, the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office works to ensure students still get a scholarship each year, even if it isn’t from County Sheriffs of Colorado.

“Many area businesses and local organizations offer scholarship programs,” Sheriff Steve Nowlin told The Journal. “In the alternate year that CSOC does not provide a scholarship for the Montezuma Sheriff, we as the agency have donated funds, as well as myself, to offer a scholarship each year that is more than $500.”

High school seniors who are a legal resident of Colorado and the U.S. are eligible. They must also plan to enroll full- or part-time in a vocational training program or institution of higher learning in Colorado for the 2025-2026 school year.

There is no limit or restriction on the degree or trade the student is pursuing.

Students who have been awarded the scholarship in previous years are also invited to reapply for the scholarship again.

Applications can be found online at www.bit.ly/4221nVC or by contacting the Sheriff’s Office. Applications turned in after the deadline may be disqualified.

Students will be selected by a citizens committee chosen by the Sheriff’s Office. Each county provides one scholarship recipient and two runners-up.

Selected students will be announced about May 1, and awards will be presented by the sheriff, CSOC said.
