Construction on a new Beny’s Diner located at Main and Mildred in Cortez could get underway if the site plan is approved by the Cortez City Council tonight.
Owners of the popular South Broadway restaurant, Victor and Magdalena Nunez, are seeking approval to expand an existing restaurant at 1031 Main St., which houses their other business, One Stop Taqueria.
According to paperwork filed with the city, Nunez purchased the lot that houses One Stop Taqueria and a vacant parcel next to it, with the vision of having two separate restaurants. The design team has since determined that remodeling the existing One Stop Taqueria would “reduce construction costs and add new light to the 1013 Main St. address.”
Plans for the restaurant indicate that it will 4,386 square feet, seat 143 and will have parking on the west and east and near the entrance of the building. Access to the site would be through Main only as the current Mildred Road access point would be closed, per an agreement with the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The Cortez Planning and Zoning Commission at their May 5 meeting recommended that the city council approve the site plan.
The council also is considering approval of a grant-funded survey of historical properties within the original townsite of Cortez North of Main Street.
The Cortez Historic Preservation Board has received a grant of $15,300 from the Colorado Historical Society to conduct a historic property inventory of 28 properties North of Main Street.
The Cortez City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. today at City Hall, 210 E. Main Street.
