The Republican Party Congressional District 3 Vacancy Committee appointed Sherri Wright of Cortez to the interim seat on the Colorado Board of Education.
The announcement came just a few weeks after Stephen Varela resigned from the Board of Education on Oct. 1. When he resigned, a 30-day deadline was triggered for Oct. 31. Wright was appointed on Oct. 22.
She faces Democrat Ellen Angeles in the Nov. 5 election for the seat.
“At the vacancy meeting, Sherri Wright received the majority of votes to fill the vacant BOE position,” the news release said. “Voting members were impressed with Wright’s four decades of service in education.”
Wright said the appointment was an “honor.”
“I am deeply honored to be appointed to the Colorado State Board of Education, and will do my upmost to uphold the students and parents so they will have the best education possible,” Wright told The Journal.
Wright is running for the CD3 BOE position on the November ballot. She has served on the Montezuma-Cortez school board and is a former teacher and executive director of the Colorado Association of School Boards.
Wright, 71, will serve in the interim position until Jan. 8, when the winner of the Nov. 5 vote will assume the position.
