Cortez resident to present slideshow on Grand Canyon burro roundup

Old pontoon rafts were used to transport horses and burros during a Grand Canyon burro roundup in 1980-81. Mark Applequist, of Cortez, was part of the volunteer crew and will reprise his experience at the Dolores Public Library on Oct. 10.

Cortez resident Mark Applequist plans to present a slideshow on Oct. 10 that will focus on the history of burros in Grand Canyon and his experience rounding up about 50 burros and sending them down river.

In January 1981, Applequist was part of an expedition to remove feral burros from Grand Canyon National Park via raft. The expedition was funded by the Fund for the Animals, founded by Cleveland Amory.

The presentation is Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Dolores Public Library meeting room, 1002 Railroad Ave. It’s free.
