Day 2 of the Colorado High School Activities Association state wrestling tournament wrapped up Friday night at the Ball Arena in Denver. Here is a recap of the second day of the championships.
CeJae Snyder continues to make a statement in her freshman season. Despite losing the 115-pound championship semifinals matchup with Ivey McAlhany of Walsenburg High School on Friday by pin fall, Snyder rallied in the consolation semifinals bracket by pinning Moffat County’s Ryleigh Hedman at 1:32. Snyder advances to the third-place match against Skyview’s Arianna Alvarado on Saturday.
Senior Aubrey Rutherford is making a memorable first and final appearance at the Ball Arena in the 145-pound bracket. After losing by pin at 2:23 in the championship semifinals, Rutherford bounced back with an impressive 3-0 streak, securing all her victories by pin fall. She will face Tairyn Lowenberg of Olathe in Saturday's third-place match.
Bluejay senior Brandon Vannest is aiming to end his final appearance in the 157-pound bracket on a high note. After losing his championship semifinal match to Casey Midcap by pin at 5:27, Vannest moved to the consolation semifinals, where he secured a 4-2 decision victory over Wylee Lorimor of Cedaredge. This win earned him a spot in Saturday’s third-place match against Caden Ruggles of Center.
Junior Jacob Martin bounced back after his 190-pound quarterfinal loss to Carter Stromer of Buena Vista, going on a 3-0 run on Friday. He won two matches with quick pin falls and one by a 12-0 major decision against Kai Wilcox of Colorado Springs. Martin now aims for his first podium finish, as he will face Stromer again in a rematch for the third-place spot.
Freshman Traycer White capped off his freshman season as he placed fifth in the state 106-pound bracket by a 7-4 decision over Monte Vista’s Mathieu Duncan. After losing his first-round match, White rallied to a 4-0 streak before losing to Fowler’s Stockon Sharon in the consolation semifinals to find himself in Saturday’s fifth-place match against Duncan.
Sophomore standout Teagan Larimore lost Friday’s championship semifinal round to Wray’s Austin Collins in the 132-pound bracket but won his consolation semifinal match by a 6-3 decision over Jadiss Rodriguez of Rocky Ford to advance to the third-place match against Cedaredge’s Ethan Hice.
