Conquistador hosts golf camp, tourney for youths

The Cortez Junior Golf Camp attracted more than 75 youths to the Conquistador Golf Course on June 5-9 for five days of instruction and practice, followed by a golf tournament on June 22.

The camp offered instruction for juniors whose skill level range from beginner to advanced. The camp provided the juniors with equipment, thanks to a grant from the Cortez Elks Lodge.

The junior golfers then got the chance to use their skills in the annual Cortez Junior Classic on June 22.

Ashlyn Hall won the tournament division for girls ages 12 and up, and Thayer Plewe won the boys division.

In the division for 9- to 12-year-olds, Jenna Wilson won the girls division, and Hunter Sparks won the boys division. Grace Belt won the division for 7- to 8-year-olds, and Cruzito Plewe won the boys’. Ashley Fury won the division for girls ages 6 and under.

Conquistador also offers weekly group lessons for juniors every Monday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per lesson. For more information and to sign up, call the Conquistador pro shop at 970-565-9208.

The Montezuma-Cortez High School golf team will start practice in a few weeks. All boys interested in playing should call the Conquistador pro shop for details.
