The Cortez Police Department and city recently announced the development of the Cortez Safety Action Plan 2024 in conjunction with Bohannan Huston, a civil engineering group in Albuquerque.
“The project aims to provide a road map to achieve zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Cortez for all modes of transportation, including walking, biking and driving,” the Cortez Safe Streets’ website says.
The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets for All program.
It will rely on community input and feedback about vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle safety in the city.
Along with gathering community input, the plan will analyze crashes and help identify potential safety improvement projects.
The interactive website has been dubbed Cortez Safe Streets, with a tagline of “Be aware, show your care.”
On the Cortez Safe Streets’ website, residents can access an interactive map that allows them to report safety issues or concerns in the city.
Details about focus groups later this year are forthcoming, but interested residents can sign up on the website and be part of a mailing list that will provide updates about actions taken to improve safety.
In addition to the website launch, data collection and review will occur this summer, and focus groups and safety recommendations will develop in fall.
This winter, the initiative will prioritize projects. In spring, the final plan will be drafted and presented to the City Council for ratification.
The funding deadline for the plan’s completion is June 2025.
