‘Can city afford to subsidize home?’

The conflict of interest fiasco with mortgage assistance for workforce housing reported by The Durango Herald seems to miss an important point. Does the city really have so much money that we can afford to subsidize a single home to the tune of $147,000?

It follows that for a mere $1 million, plus change, seven families can get cheaper housing. This doesn’t include salaries for city employees’ time and effort.

How can this be called a replicable model? If Durango is so flush with cash, perhaps city tax rates should be questioned as an opportunity to make Durango more affordable.
