A fire broke out at a residence in the 25000 block of Road F.2 after a kerosene heater in a camp trailer exploded just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The man residing in the camp trailer was not in the trailer at the time of the explosion, and relatives transported the dogs to safety, said Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin.

There were no injuries, but two vehicles were destroyed, he said.

There were no resulting spot fires, Nowlin said.

A 3:15 p.m. a Nixle alert advised residents to avoid traffic in the area of Road F.2 and Road 25.

Another alert at 4:03 p.m. notified that the area was reopened for full traffic.

Clouds of smoke could initially be seen billowing into the sky, although they quickly dwindled as several different agencies responded to the scene and fire mitigation commenced.

“They got onto it pretty fast, which is good,” Nowlin said.

He said that the area is a “tinder box” and was grateful that nobody was injured and that the damage was relatively minimal.
