To give local women artists a platform to perform and share their talents, the Zu Gallery is hosting a showcase event in September, and auditions for that event are happening more immediately, in May.
Those interested in possibly participating in the “Amplified” event this fall have a choice of Thursday, May 15 or Saturday, May 24 to publicly audition at the Zu Gallery in Cortez, 48 W. Main St.
Space is limited to 24 auditions total, with 12 each night.
"Our goal is simple but powerful– to amplify the voices of women musicians in our community," says Abi Wild Rose, musician coordinator and "Amplified" alumni.
Solo artists and small ensembles of up to four members of all music genres are welcome to come out – so long as they’re at least 18 years old.
Those auditioning will have a 10-minute slot to perform. Original music is preferred, and professional sound equipment will be provided.
There will be a panel of judges at the audition “selecting a Best in Show winner, while audience members will vote for a People’s Choice award recipient,” according to a news release.
“Winners in both categories will receive cash prizes from event sponsors and featured performance slots at the main September event,” the release said. The cash prizes are sponsored by the LOR Foundation and Doobie Sisters.
The “Amplified” event is over two days, on Sept. 12 and 13– that’s a Friday and Saturday. At the show this fall, 16 women musicians will play, selected from the auditions in May.
All 16 that play at the “Amplified” event in September will be paid. More than 100 community members are expected to attend the “Amplified” event, and tickets will cost $20. The auditions are free for community members to attend.
