Dove Creek protects undefeated season

Three more matches, three more wins, and just like that, the Dove Creek Bulldogs volleyball pushed their record to 13-0 on the season.

Kicking off the second of eight-straight road games on Thursday, Sept. 26, the Bulldogs defeated Monument Valley, Utah, in straight sets, 25-11, 25-18, 25-11.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs were Shelbie Knuckles with 20 kills, Corissa Guynes with seven aces and 12 digs, and Madison Young with 22 assists.

“It was kind of a long trip down there,” said Bulldogs’ head coach Scott Knuckles. “The girls came out right off the bat, ready to play.”

Next competing in the Ridgeway-Tri on Saturday, Sept. 28 against Ouray, the Bulldogs won again, 25-4, 25-7, 25-7.

Tying for the Bulldogs’ lead in kills with 11 were Shelbie Knuckles and Jennifer Fury. Kristin Knuckles let the team in digs with five, while Madison Young led the team in assists with 19.

“We played a lot better than when we played Ouray the time before,” said Knuckles. “We were able to limit our errors.”

Concluding the week’s play against Ridgway on Saturday, Sept. 28, the Bulldogs recorded another straight-set victory, this time by scores of 25-19, 25-17, 25-11.

For the third straight game, Shelbie Knuckles was stellar, pacing the Bulldogs with 16 kills. Kristin Knuckles led the team in digs with 15, while Madison Young paced the Bulldogs in aces and assists with two and 21 respectively.

“(Young) was super consistent against Ridgway, and she has been super consistent throughout the year,” coach Knuckles said. On the season, she has touched the ball 751 times, and she has recorded 250 assists. She has only made seven errors.”

Next up for the Bulldogs are road matchups against Dolores on Tuesday, Oct. 1, Mancos on Friday, Oct. 4, and Monument Valley, Utah, on Saturday, Oct. 5.
