Looking to open the season with a bang, the Dove Creek Bulldogs football team got off to a rough start. Playing against a tough Simla Cubs team on Aug. 24, Dove Creek was pounded 48-6.
According to Bulldogs head coach Shane Baughman, the game stayed tight until four minutes remained in the first half, at which point Simla scored three times to pull ahead 20-0.
Following halftime, the tough times continued for the Bulldogs as Simla pulled away.
“Conditioning was a huge factor in the game,” said Baughman. “We were not ready to go, as far as our conditioning goes. That will not happen again. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
Pacing the Bulldogs with 109 yards passing and 62 yards rushing, sophomore Jordan Earnst provided one of the few bright spots for the Bulldogs on offense.
“For his first start at quarterback, (Earnst) played pretty well,” said Baughman.
With hopes of putting a tough opening season loss behind them, the Bulldogs will next travel to Rangely on Aug. 30 to face the Rangely High School Panthers.
