With their offense showing signs of development and their defense improving, the Dove Creek boys basketball team is hoping to make a late-season run.
Bulldogs blast Nucla
Opening last week’s play on Feb. 14 at home against Nucla, the Bulldogs rode a strong offensive performance to an 83-22 victory.
The Bulldogs outscored the Mustangs 31-13 in the second quarter for a 51-23 halftime lead.
From then on, it was all Bulldogs as sophomore Jordan Ernst combined with sophomore Spencer Gatlin and senior Taylor Hankins to produce easy buckets.
Freshman Scott Gatlin drilled his three three-point shots before leaving with an injury.
Bulldogs head coach Curtis Garver expressed pleasure with his team’s ability to find shots.
“We just had a lot of good shots from the outside, and the kids knocked them down,” he said.
Bulldogs fall to Ouray
Hoping to win again versus Ouray on Feb. 15, the Bulldogs hung tough before losing 67-54 on their home floor.
Playing well during the early stages of the contest, Ouray jumped out to a 14-13 first-quarter lead before outscoring the Bulldogs 12-9 in the second quarter to build a 26-22 halftime lead.
Overwhelmed in the third quarter however, the Bulldogs were outscored 22-9 in the third quarter and entered the fourth quarter trailing 48-31.
With their record now at 3-15 on the season, the Bulldogs will next play in Nucla on Feb. 22.
